Well, I just scanned the 40 or so unused strings (mostly provisional messages, a few totally blank) upward in the file to the last recognized string with text that displayed in the correct location. All .TEXT and .ENDT codes appear to be in order. Draken had located the matching unused string earlier and made an Easter egg reference, but overwrote it by accident. At any rate, once we confirmed that the hidden character was Hidenori Shibao, we simply subbed his text over "Provisional Message" and all is well.
See no point in trying to chase this down further. If all we had was two or three codes and strings that didn't match in this entire game, fixed by simply shifting a text string to work around the glitch, I'd say we're in pretty fine shape.
In fact, I previously found a few places where adjacent text strings were exactly duplicated in the Japanese dump and their raw translations, so I'm wondering if the developers didn't do the same exact thing in a few places. Gosh! One little tiny thing out of whack and boom! Ripple effect! But it's all good now for L-II(e).
